I grow some trees in pond baskets successfully and have never used DE. Actually I have never used DE in any bonsai or other plant cultivation. So I can with confidence say that should is the wrong word to use. It is by far not a requiremen nor needed.
So the question left to answer is if you can use DE in pond baskets? I am quite sure it is not bad if not overdone, so the answer to that would be yes.
In my opinion and experience there is a danger in focusing on things that makes little to no difference for the tree health in the way that it diverts you from what is really important, horticulture, climate, growing conditions and care scedules.
DE is not a miracle product, but it may have some benefits in some aplications, for some people and in some climates. So by all means, try it and report back to us your findings. Just as long as it does not divert you from the basics in bonsai. That would anyway make any findings useless.
