Carmona tree - tellow leaves falling off was created by AlexandraP

Hello.
I am new to bonsai care and would need some help.
I got a Carmona tree about a month ago. The leaves were initially green and healthy but after about 1 week they started yellowing and falling off. So did the small white flowers it had at the time.
I changed its position to a place where it would get more light. It is currently in a west-facing window. The average temperature is around 21 degrees and humidity about 55-60%. I water it when the top part of the soil feels dry, about 2 times a week. I water it until the tray below fills with water. I use tap water that I leave in a bottle for at least 24h before watering.
The leaves are still yellowing and falling off, although maybe at a slower rate. They look rather sad :( I also noticed once or twice a small fly around the tree, but i thought it's just a normal fly. Could it be some sort of parasite?
What could be the cause? Does it not get enough light? Is it a disease?
Thank you for your advice

We have many questions about this species. It is a very hard to grow bonsai. We think it has to do with humidity. Our house may be way to dry.

Hi! I also have this wonderful tree. For me, keeping this bonsai alive isn’t too hard; I think the climate suits the tree. However, establishing a proper structure is a completely different challenge. Since I’m a beginner and most of the branches grow straight up, toward the trunk, or into each other, I still have a lot to learn and plenty of work ahead. So, I just share my growing conditions in hope it might provide some useful information.

To keep it alive, I placed my Carmona in an east-facing window. I water it quite a bit year-round, especially in the summer when temperatures exceed 30 degrees Celsius. On those hot days, I water it every day, and once a week, I give it not just a mist but a full shower and soaking. I make sure not to let it dry out completely. In winter, my room temperature stays around 25 degrees Celsius, while outside temperatures can drop below -25 degrees Celsius. I still try to ensure that the bonsai doesn't dry out completely by watering it 2-3 times a week, but with a smaller quantity of water compared to the summer. Also, I don’t soak it in winter; instead, I occasionally spray mist on the leaves because the air is dry in my home.

Very interesting. Please stay around and help all the beginners with dieing carmonas going forward. The only one successful here so far is in a humid subtropical climate which is not very useful for most beginners.

I have 8 years experience with approx 30 different species. Carmona is the only one I have failed several times and given up on.

I couldn't find a photo of the tree before pruning, but here's what was removed. Now, my tree looks a bit bare. I tried to cut away anything growing straight up, toward the trunk, or crossing into other branches.  Of course, the tree has now been repotted, and I had to remove some roots. I know repotting at this time goes against the usual guidelines, but the previous soil mix was already in poor condition.

P.S. I couldn't upload the MP4 video file directly, so I've included it in a ZIP file.

Good luck with heavy pruning and repotting at the same time and at the wrong time of the year. Please come back in spring and show us a healthy tree.
