Japanese White Pine , where to start? was created by Ethan2029

Hi all,

I have recently purchased what was listed as a Japanese white pine nursery bonsai and it has arrived today. I plan on (eventually over many years) shaping it into an informal upright shape. Upon looking at it I have to admit as a beginner I have no idea where to start! It has a very dense top to the bonsai and quite a few branches overall. I had originally planned to prune it back a little and then wire it so I can create a slight bend in the trunk but like I said I am struggling to understand where I should begin (which branches to cut, should I start pruning yet or allow it to grow longer first etc).

Any advice / tips would be much appreciated! (See attached photos).

Like with all trees you start by growing it healthy for at least one year. No pruning, no wiring, no repotting. Just learn how to care for the tree.

Meanwhile study the art of bonsai especially pine care and design. Then study your tree. What is in there, what can it become? Draw a picture of what you decide for the future. Make a plan at least 6 month before you take actions.

When you are ready, you do not need to ask basic questions. Come back to us when you are ready and ask about feedback on your plan before starting.

Beginners taking hasty decitions rarelly turn out well. Bonsai is a maraton, not a sprint. But pines...they are ultra maraton.

Good luck
