Focus got cold! was created by Sponty

Good afternoon/morning.

I've had my Ficus bonsai for a good while now and have grown rather fond of it. It usually lives outside until frost appears and it's brought in for the winter.

I was a little late this season and didn't manage to get it inside before the frost came and it got a little frozen. I immediately brought it inside to warm up when I was home and it has been inside since. As a few days have gone by the leaves have darkened and begin to shrivel. Some have even fallen off when I've shaken the canopy.

I'm hoping someone is going to tell me it's not dead and there is still hope. It was a healthy tree before the incident. Looking up a few videos on how to help an unhappy Ficus and it was recommended to remove all the leaves and black shoots. Does this seem like the best thing to do and do you think there is still hope?

All the best!

How cold did it get? They can take light frost although they may lose leaves, if it was much lower than say -1C it may not survive, having said that if it was only one night it might be ok.
Wait and see. Don't let it get dry.

Hi, it was only outside for a night before I noticed. I took it inside and warmed it up as quick as I could. The soil was quite solid and the leaves had what looked to be a light frosting.

I'm unsure if I should prune all the leaves off to encourage it to focus on root repair rather than trying to fix the already damaged/dead leaves.

*EDIT: Would misting the leaves help?*

Ok, well, it is the leaves that have been damaged, so the roots should be ok, it might lose a few roots. I don't think misting will help, as most of the leaves are beyond saving and hopefully new ones will grow. It may take several months to start to recover.

I would take the leaves that are dead off leaving any that look as if they might be ok rather than taking them all off at once

Okay, this sounds somewhat promising. I'll pick off the dead leaves and leave the ones that look to be okay. I have the tree under a grow light at the moment from my hydroponic set-up so I'm hoping this will also aid in recovery.

I appreciate your help, it has been much better than the information I could find online. Hopefully the little tree will pull through, I would be gutted to loose it after so many years!

Thank you, all the best!
