What soil does the Dawn Redwood use that is the best for them. I know free draining, but so many free draining soils out there.

I would appreciate some advice as there seems to be no end to the different soils out there.

Thank you,

Carol

I think you have been here long enough to understand that there are not one perfect soil that fits everyones care and climate.

Dawn redwood is close to a swamp species and like it quite wet at all times. Therefore it is adviceable to mix something slightly more moist holdingbolag than other trees in your care. I bought a forest in pure cocofibre. Did not repot until two growing seasons later and they sure seemed to like it. In my current mix I have small portions of pumice and lava rock for drainage and quite a lot of bark mulch and moler clay for moisture retention. Something like 15,15,30,40 mix.

One thing that is good for dawn redwood is to keet the pot on a tray that fills upp slightly when watering. The soil will absorb it while the tree drinks and keep it wet a little bit longer.
