when is it too late to repot? was created by Amman

hello, this is my first season as a bonsai hobbyist. I have a beginner's dilemma - I have 3 medium sized nursery stock trees that I acquired recently and so didn't get to repot in time, a British boxwood, a japanese Andromeda and an American/japanese hybrid yew. It is now mid June here in Vancouver, Canada and I believe the climate zone is 8a. Is it too late to repot these? My main concern is that they're in completely organic nursery stock soil with some perlite and plastic fertilizer pellets. I would guess they're 2-3 years old and each are about a foot tall. Please let me know my options as I'm nervous and anxious about it lol. Thanks!

Far too late, leave until spring as long as the soil is draining there is no problem.

I do not get it. Where do the information that nurcery soil should be an issue for the trees come from? It is the same soil it has been grown in for comercial purpouse. If it is good for comercial production it is good for a beginner in the bonsai hobby. Your main concern should be to keep the trees healthy and growing, not to stress them with unneccesary repotting. You can repot in spring 2025, 2026 or even later, no hurry whatsoever. Just make sure the trees are healthy before doing it and ask än experienced bonsai artist in your area to help and show how to do it.

The "plastic" fertilizer is called osmocote. In my opinion one of the best fertilizers for bonsai that I use regularily on all my trees. Again, why would a comercial plant producer use things that are bad for the trees? They would be out of business in no time if they did.

Didn’t mean the soil was bad per se, I meant more in terms of it being completely organic but should’ve added very compact, not well draining soil, almost not at all, really and then fertilizer pellets whose contents I have no knowledge of. All these things I’m sure are great for the purpose of growing a giant tree but maybe not so much for bonsai? But I’ve also learned so much more just this past week so not so worried anymore lol. Slowly learning patience and not to freak out over every little thing lol. Thanks for your help guys!

As said. The beads is osmocote. You can read up on what is in them online. Really good fertilizer for any tree, big or small.

Name a fertilizer that you know the content in.
