I was wondering what the best nutrients/fertilizer is for a new cutting? What is the best to use? I just started a cutting with rooting hormone in good drainage soil and I was wondering what the best is for it. I am new to doing cuttings.

I would appreciate any advice on this.

Hey Carol!

Maple cuttings are tricky in my opinion, you must do a bunch so you can get some to root.

I had enough of trying it myself, results are way better with air-layering, however when it's pruning remains, it doesn't bother to try right?

I never fertilize cuttings the first year. Roots grow faster if they have a lack of nutrients. But I have never tried maples yet.

Ah, just noticed you said Japanese Trident Maple, Japanese Maple are Trident Maple as they're commonly called are two different species (Acer Buergerianum and Acer Palmatum), So I should pointout that by experience, Trident Maples do root more easily (or less difficult xD)...

This year I pruned my Trident Maple, removed 2 rooted air-layer from it, and from the thicker branches I tried some cuttings, nothing special, just rought sand, no hormones, no nothing... Like I said it was all going to the trash anyway, and they seem to be rooting, but sometimes they just shoot new growth, because of their retained energy, and die...
