Trunk Splitting was created by rootybonsai

Hello, I have a Fukien tea tree and I've recently noticed it appears that its trunk looks like it's splitting. I've tried researching this online, but haven't found anything really that matches what my tree has going on. I haven't wired it at all and I didn't notice any progression of the split, I just noticed it was like this one day (very well could've been happening over time). Does anyone know what this is/what could be causing it? I just want to make sure this isn't causing damage to the tree or a sign of damage

Impossible to tell for sure without a picture. But I think it happened when the tree was wired. Not a big issue as long as it dont collect water in the crack.

That split is not du to bending or cracking. It looks like there was once a branch cut off there and it has not healed properly. Try to poke inside to see if there are any soft rotten wood in there. If it is, try to get as much out as possible and seal the hole with putty. If it has started to rot it will continue as long as water runs into the hole.

Thanks for the response. I have a few questions. It's at the bottom of the trunk, is it possible there could've been a branch that low? Also, I've had the tree for 4+ years and never cut a branch near that spot, could it have been deteriorating all this time? And lastly, do you have any recommendations on which putty to use?

It does seem like it's rotted, I just have no idea how this could've started

Yes it is possible for a branch grow that low. But if you had the tree for 4 years it is unlikelly you never seen it before. This is still a mystery. Anyway, if water can penetrate I would still seal it with putty. I use children play putty from a local craft chain called Panduro. However, I am not sure that helps you. I think any putty will do. If you want to go all in you proboably can buy japanese bonsai putty like this one in most bonsai specialiced stores:
