Does anyone have experience with an Japanese golden maple (Acer shirasawanum Aureum) and can tell me the best time to prune it ?

I do hard prune to my japanese maples in early summer. And cutting back new growth one or two times during the growing season.

I don't think that variety makes any difference, however your location do.

I prune my maples when they are dormant . Your tree will not bleed heavily when there is no sap flow .
