Hi all,

I recently aquired a Burning Bush Bonsia (10 years old) from a freind who is downsizing his collection. The tree is in great health, and was previosuly potted with traditional 1:1:1 of : Akadama, pumice, and lava rock soil mixture as is often recommeneded on this site as well.

It has become root bound and will need to be repotted. My friend mentioned that if moved to a bigger pot the soil mixture may need to be adjusted for more drainage.

For this type of tree is should i continue to use the traditional 1:1:1 of : Akadama, pumice, and lava rock soil mixture?

I have used this mixture for all my previous and current bonsai without issue, however i have never owned a Burning Bush, so any additional types from any owners would be great!

If you ask 10 bonsai people about the best soil mix you will get 12 different answers. The difference not only beeing in species and pot size, but also in climate, care routine and growing conditions.

Go with the soil mix you are normally using. When trying new things it is better to try them one by one and leave the rest as is. You have a new species and that is enough news.

If you are in the nortern hemisphere, now is summer and not a good time to repot.

Pefect, this was my mindset as well!

Yes, I will not be repotting until around early March 2024 prior to the growth season kicking off :) Thank you!
