Chinese Elm Broom Style?

Hi everyone! Relatively new to the bonsai world. I have been growing Chinese elms from seed that are now about 5 years old, but those are in the ground. In the meantime, my wife recently purchased a potted Chinese elm for me. I think it lends itself to a broom style, but I'm not sure. Also confused as to whether I should take this out of the pot to let it thicken up. Any and all advice on styling/care is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Do you think it needs to thicken up? If so any of the techniqes used to thicken up trunks apply. But it always have to be your vision for the tree that set the rules for how to develop it.
