Yeah, it was I have realized too. That you can give a solid answer, but without any hupsa. And no likes. Someone does a happy clappy repeat of the answer and they get a series of likes. Interesting.

That's one of the points; we've got NO LIKES here in this Forum, so "thank yous" are used instead, which bring us to the root (no pun intended) of the problem, if it's really a problem:
People got used to get likes in Facebook and Instagram to measure one's level of popularity; but above a certain quantity of likes, they can monetize it.
Which leads us to the "Likes Industry", where one can actually BUY likes and comments.

Yes, that's true.
As I am used to hit it when I like an useful post or answer, I don't see why people sometimes make a new post just to say "i agree", or "Thanks, I like it!" instead of using the thank you button.
It's not a matter of popularity on this forum as already said, but being polite and nice is always good for everybody, I guess.

I also use it to see whether I am adding something to the forum. I prefer to keep my "thank you" up, so I see I am making a positive contribution rather than just "comment"

I use the thank you feature in 2 ways:
- to acknowledge particularly useful or insightful posts from others
- to gauge how useful or relevant my comments are in relation to some of the forum power users (Leatherback, Auk, Mimo, Clicio) who seem to keep their thanked to post ratio at or above 33%

Reasons:
- I'm a moderate forum user that has only 5 years of bonsai experience.
- I have 12 years experience with more temperamental house plants, which does and does not translate to bonsai.
- I work in the agriculture industry for a global company in pesticide formulation development and have a fair amount of in-field row crop experience. I can literally talk forever about plants and insects.
