I am very much interested in this technique, for pines.
When root bound (or Yamadori) and in need of a repot, to keep mycorrhizae developing and to make the process less stressful for the tree, some authors half bare root the tree, or slice the rootball in wedges, or do both in one season and wait.
Next year, IF the tree is strong, then the other half of the rootball is bared, or new wedges are sliced through the "old" unpruned half, or both.
Any practical experiences with this technique?
I ask because next Spring I will repot some pines (root bound), and one is a mame (small) and the other is big with lots of foliage, and I don't want to shock these two more than it's needed.
Example below:

I have seen someone do it in an article. The whole article was about this technique, I will try to find it for you!
